Do You Know This Person?
by Marion Spellman

When the urge to use alcohol or other drugs has precedence over the rest of your life, you are powerless. When your well being, your family, your livelihood, and even established relationships are in jeopardy because of your addiction, you are powerless. Lost dignity, vision, and even hope are weighing in the balance with the frightening realization that you may never achieve them.
Do you know this person? The person is called father/mother, husband/wife, son/daughter, and this person’s name may even be pastor/parishioner, or community leader/street thug.

Today, no one is oblivious to the evils that rob our families of its wholesome values, and nothing does it like drugs and alcohol. When cloaked by secrecy, it is an even greater monster to catch and finally destroy.

The object of the child’s game, hide and seek, is to find a secure place of concealment and to remain there without being discovered. However, when you are caught, you are “it.” In the innocent eyes of a child, this is all fun, right? But when you indulge in this childish recreation with your family, your friends, your employers, or your church, Satan becomes your captain and convinces you that you are invincible. However, you have fooled everyone but yourself.

The important thing for you to do is to come out of hiding and get the help that you need. Things will not get better with a new house, new job, and more money. Everything gets worse until you admit that you need help. There is no shame in needing help; however, there is shame in knowing that you need help but letting pride or position prevent you from asking for it.

The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” If you know in your heart that you have fallen short, the first step is to reach up and ask God to forgive you, then, reach out and get help. This may be the greatest step of courage that you will ever take as an adult, but when you take it, your cry for help will soon become your shout of victory.
