Peniel Drugs/Alcohol
Rehabilitation Center
By Rebecca J. Jenkins
Former Executive Director,
Department of Women’s Ministries
As
we watch the evening news, much of it cannot be labelled "good
news." I would like to report some good news. In Johnstown, Pennsylvania,
there is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program called Peniel. This
program, under the direction of Drs. Marion and Harold Spellman, is
licensed by the Department of Health, Office of Drug! Alcohol Addiction
Programs, and is a residential treatment facility that offers help for
male and female substance abusers 18 years and older.
Upon completion, the attractive and comfortable dormitory at our Johnstown
Center has a potential to house 135 people. During the 12- to 18-month
treatment period, abusers receive help in overcoming their addictions
and learning how to live effective, productive lives as contributing
members of their communities. Now that’s good news.
PENIEL is a nonprofit organization, which operates under a nine-member
policy-making board of directors. They have an effective no-nonsense,
intensive approach to treatment; using Bible therapy and a comprehensive
individualized treatment plan for each resident.
To read about the outstanding success rate and what God accomplishes
through these dedicated servants is heartwarming; however, to know them
personally is most rewarding. Dr. Marion Spellman, the founding president,
takes time from her busy schedule to serve on the International Board
of Directors for the Department of Ladies Ministries. Throughout our
board discussions and deliberations, one senses her contagious love
for people and heartbeat for ministry. Both she and Dr. Harold Spellman
are credentialed ministers with the Church of God. They have earned
the respect of their residents, office staff and colleagues.
Not only does PENIEL work with the abusers, but they believe family
involvement in the client’s treatment is one of the most crucial
factors to his successful recovery. This program has salvaged multiplied
hundreds of individuals since opening its doors in 1980. 1 thank God
that the Spellmans with their faithful and qualified staff took this
giant step of faith and continue to be used of God to help people around
the country
